The Rhinoceros, answers to question 4 and 7.

Question #4:
The text compares the woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer and Hans Burgkmair; which of the two woodcuts do you prefer and why?

My pick would have to go to Durer's Rhinoceros woodcut. This piece sends my mind flying. Very illustrative, and offers a bit of embellishment and fantasy to the animal. In actuality, being so used to see realistic representations of animals, it's always refreshing to see a different take, even more so if this is the first impression the animal left on an artist, after seeing it for the first time. Burgkmair although a more accurate representation, with a solid render and line work, just seems a bit boring to me.

Question #7
Which depiction of the rhinoceros did you find to be the most amusing, and why?

Giovanni Giacoma Penni's depiction is certainly the most amusing. The child like strokes and representation gets a chuckle out of me. Also the empathy towards the animal is evident in this illustration. It helps separating the funny looking rendering from it's historical context.
