TOPIC #1 In-Depth Project.

Hello everyone.

To get a better grasp of the project's  direction and process I'll share some images and a step by step analysis in this post.

The idea of taking objects from a trivial context and switch them by representations of themselves caught my attention early in the topic thanks to the White Bird reading. I approached some of the smaller works as such.

After creating these small projects, I felt some of the concepts could be explored more and as such decided to take one of them and expand upon it for the in-depth project. I picked the center piece because the composition and theme could be done better.

In trying to be more ambitious the idea of creating a whole table set up came to mind, so I created some quick sketches of what I would like to do. After agreeing upon some color and material decisions the process started.

Six plates, decorative napkins,  doilies ( actually unsure that's the name for it, can't find it for the life of me) and also the sculptural cutlery hanging from the wall, were created. The materials used were construction paper, glue and thread. Originally the cutlery on the table was meant to be paper as well but because of time constraints at the moment I decided against it.

The shot was then taken from a higher point of view and a fish-eye lens to capture more of the surroundings. Once this was done I went to Photoshop to alter the image. The saturation of the image was brought down by about 85% through masking, leaving the paper sculptures and floor with muted colors, that were also altered to varying degrees to achieve the results above. Once everything was done the image was sent to print on matte photograph paper.

The image was also cut into 5 pieces, and because of the material of the photo, they had to be mounted to maintain rigidity. For that I used mounting board and glued with rubber cement. Afterwards the piece were cut and ready for placement. All that was needed then was to focus on the final composition and angles.

Since the main focus of the piece was the table set up, I already knew it would have to be the one forward in space, therefore the last one to be put up. The base is foam-core and to create the illusion of depth, small foam-core cubes were cut and built into columns. Depending on the angle and depth I wanted to achieve, some of these foam-core columns were cut at angles. Final step was gluing the individual pieces to the base to create the final product.

The piece was done. All that was left was to try and save it in case Hurricane Irma destroyed us all.
